Refugees and Asylum Seekers Find their Voice

On Thursday 16th April a group of refugees and asylum seekers gathered with invited guests and volunteers at Holy Name Church for inspiring presentations and a tasty lunch, to celebrate 11 trainees successfully completing the ‘Finding Your Voice’ programme.

The course concluded with moving and inspiring moments, as each of the trainees gave a short talk, covering a range of topics including sharing their own personal stories, or giving an insight into their countries of origin and cultures: this was the culmination of five weeks of training delivered every Thursday to build confidence in public speaking in English, and presenting to audiences.

One participant was so determined to attend that even though the Home Office dispersed him to Keighley, he made the two hour journey every week to join the course!

The Finding Your Voice course was led by Rose McCarthy, with training coordination and support provided by volunteers Jo Bailey and Linden – who all volunteer at Horsforth Town of Sanctuary.

The event also included a shared lunch, with delicious food prepared by the participants themselves, supported by the course staff and organising team, creating a warm atmosphere of cooperation, learning, and community spirit.

One participant said: “Today was a very special day for me. I want to thank my dear teacher (Rose) from the bottom of my heart for all the support and guidance. Also, a big thank you to all of you for the delicious food and the wonderful moments we shared. Receiving this certificate alongside you all made it even more joyful!”

Representatives from Chapel FM radio station and arts centre joined in for the last session, and together with Sanctuary Got Talents, they have started a follow up 10 week course called Raising Your Voices – Theatre Class of 2026.

They have also recorded some great podcasts called Sanctuary Diaries, including one on Horsforth Town of Sanctuary, starring some of our volunteers – you can listen to it HERE

Sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this programme such a supportive and empowering experience!
