Farmers’ Market Celebrates 14 years!

Horsforth Farmers’ Market has been running for 14 years now, and many of the dedicated team from Horsforth Churches Together Team have been involved for all of that time!

On Saturday 3rd October they celebrated their birthday with drinks and cake, along with great music by the Joy Choir and a Bouncy Castle:

Three community grants were presented by local Town Councillor and businessman Julio Tumalan, and Tancred Farm Shop were presented with their 100 certificate, to mark their one-hundredth appearance at the market.

The Community Grants were awarded to the following groups/causes:

Nepal Flood Disaster
Massive floods and landslides swept through border towns and villages in Nepal and Tibet in late August, wiping out thousands of houses and destroying energy infrastructure. Since then, 1,400 people are known to have died, thousands are still missing and many are displaced. Scientists say the floods were caused by a collapse of rock wall and glacier ice. HFM are contributing to the relief effort through this grant.

Give a Child a Hope – supporting children in Matugga, Uganda
St Margarets’ Primary School have had a link with this charity for many years, and recently had a visit from Bishop Ivan from the Children’s Centre, to update them on how they are helping orphaned and vulnerable children to learn and thrive through education, food, medical care, and nurturing in a loving environment. The centre helps around 600 children, but the Give a Child a Hope charity (based in Ilkley) focusses on supporting around 150 of the most disadvantaged and needy children, paying for their education and welfare needs.

Befriending Death Group Sessions – coming soon
“I’m not afraid of death; I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” – Woody Allen. Death has been moved to the periphery in most people’s experience. It is rare to hear people discussing death and actively preparing for when the inevitable happens. We wish to change that. By using short introductory talks followed by discussions we aim to help people be better informed, to reflect and to consider some important choices. Because talking now helps your loved ones later. The course is called “Befriending Death” and will run in the New Year – more details to follow.

We look forward to another great year with our thriving Farmers’ Market!
